Services: Course Reserves

Reserve Item Checkout Policies

The LBCC Library's Reserves collection exists to assist students who may be in need of a short-term loan of a class book or textbook. While the collection has many textbooks, it does not have all books used in all LBCC courses. The Library encourages students to use the collection to aid them when waiting for financial aid or for their textbooks to arrive in the bookstore; it is generally not a good practice to rely upon the collection for an entire term as a particular reserve book might have to be shared amongst 20-60 students.

Reserve items generally check out for either 2 hours or 3 days.

  • 2 hour items must remain in the building. There is a photocopier and scanner located by the Jimi Hendrix poster close to the Library stairwell at the Albany Campus Library. The HOC library in Lebanon has a scanner located near the emergency exit.
  • 3 day items must be returned on or before the due date indicated on your receipt.

What if the Library doesn't have a book I need for a class?

  1. Ask your instructor to see if a copy of the item may be placed in the Library's Reserves collection.
  2. Ask the Librarian to see what other avenues might exist for obtaining items.

Course Reserves

  • LBCC faculty may place items on reserve by brining them to the library with a filled out Course reserves form.
  • It can take several days to a week for us to process items. To have them ready for checkout at the start of the year or term, bring them to us at least a week in advance.

Course reserves are a way to temporarily make available materials that students need for coursework, either required or optional reading/viewing. These are usually the books or DVDs listed in the class syllabus, recommended testing books for students preparing for an exam, or items students need to reference for an assignment.

These items have limited checkout periods of two hours or three days, so that multiple students can access the item before an assignment is due. Reserves items are kept behind service counters and may be restricted to library building use only. The library cannot guarantee the availability of materials when there is high demand. Faculty and students are expected to abide by applicable copyright and fair use laws.

LBCC faculty may place items on reserve by bringing them to the Albany campus library or HOC library in Lebanon and filling out a reserves form. You may also complete the form in advance and bring it with your reserve items to the library. Library-owned materials may be placed on reserve by pulling the item from the stacks, giving to library personnel, and filling out a reserves form for it. Please do not submit materials borrowed from other libraries for reserve at the LBCC Library.
